UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné): agroecology and feminism in Guinea Bissau
d. Iara Lee, BR / BI | Film Screening

In the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau, this thought-provoking film takes you on a journey that follows brave local women who challenge patriarchy by building institutions that promote self-sufficiency through agroecology. They also defy social norms by standing up against female genital mutilation and rejecting forced marriage. Carrying forward the legacy of Amílcar Cabral, the Bissau-Guinean independence leader who placed women’s rights at the center of the struggle for liberation, the women of a rising generation are taking their power back.

KITE ZO A: LEAVE THE BONES
d. Kaveh Nabatian – CA/HT | Film screening

In 1791, in Haiti, Dutty Boukman presided over a Vodou ritual in Bois-Caïman that led to the creation of the first Black republic. Since then, rituals of transformation and artistic expression have been at the core of a thriving culture as the country faces foreign oppression, poverty, and natural disasters. “Kite Zo A” is a sensorial film about rituals in Haiti, from ancient to modern, made in collaboration with poets, dancers, musicians, fishermen, daredevil rollerbladers, and Vodou priests, set to poetry by Wood-Jerry Gabriel.

Nabatian has made a beautiful film that is an act of faith and love for a country and its people. To live in Haiti is an act of rebellion against entropy, cultural decay, natural disasters, and human failings. In Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones, Nabatian paints a hopeful picture of where the fiercely irrepressible Haitian people came from. – Film Threat

Kaveh Nabatian’s thrilling film Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones combines dance and politics into a furious conflagration that is equal parts history, observational documentary and something more ineffable. The result is an experiential film that defies easy classification. -The Tyee, Dorothy Woodend

This film has such a mind blowing collection of sights and sounds that it’s kind of like watching a Werner Herzog documentary that was on a crazed mix of acid and speed. [Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones] -Unseen Films
