Palimpsests of the Becoming

Palimpsests of the Becoming” invites us into a space of layered memory, where identity is not fixed but constantly rewritten. Like a palimpsest manuscript, where traces of the past remain beneath each new inscription, the exhibition becomes a meeting point between what was and what is emerging. Each object, image, or gesture carries the imprint of a conscious fragility, reflecting how personal and collective experiences overlap, repeat, and transform.

The exhibition begins with two independent projects — This may not be tea by Ștefania Crăciun and In a continuous loopby Lăcră Grozăvescu — two voices exploring the tensions between memory and identity, between the ephemeral and the material. Daria Sonda’s visual intervention acts as a poetic bridge, adding a layer of reflection that traverses both artistic approaches and brings them into dialogue.

Together, “Palimpsests of the Becoming” brings the three artists into a shared space of exploration, where memory is activated and transformed, opening new perspectives on identity.

About the artist

Daria Sonda graduated from the “Nicolae Tonitza” High School of Fine Arts and studied Film Directing for two years, studies she later left behind due to personal values. She is currently a second-year student at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, majoring in Photo-Video. Photography has been her language since high school—a way to question reality and to search for the authenticity of the image in a world already oversaturated with visuals and imagination. Lăcră Grozăvescu (b. 1996, Romania) is a visual artist and graduate of the Master's program in Photography and Dynamic Image at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Her artistic practice lies at the intersection of photography, embroidery, video, and installation, guided by a deep concern for inherited silence, personal and collective trauma, and the fragility of memory. Her works often emerge from intimate, autobiographical spaces, constructing visual narratives that blend documentary with emotional gesture. Over time, she has exhibited internationally in Italy, the United Kingdom, Greece, Japan, and the United States, and has participated in mentorship sessions in the Netherlands and Romania. She was named a Fresh Eyes Talent 2025 by GUP Magazine and has been featured in Fisheye Magazine, Lenscratch, and L’œil de la photographie. Ștefania Crăciun (b. 2000, Bucharest) is an interdisciplinary visual artist trained at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, where she graduated with both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from the Photography and Moving Image department. Her artistic practice explores photography, collage, large-scale drawing, experimental film, and installation. She works with a variety of unconventional materials and objects, constantly challenging herself to step outside her comfort zone. Her projects emerge spontaneously, guided by her personal emotions and experiences.
