In late 2018 war was over on the streets of Damascus – there were no more gunfights, bombs, mortar shells, snipers. Life seemed like going back to normal. A whole generation had hopes for change, for a better future, and we were ready to start our fight against (for?) life. But soon it turned out to just be a beautiful unrealistic dream, reality hit hard. The economy fell apart, prices went through the roof, there were no jobs, people were struggling to survive. After eight years of war, escaping death on the daily, seeing all of our friends and family immigrating, moving through a ton of houses, after all of that, that was the moment we stopped caring any more. We started living day per day, no future plans, no remorse, living with nothing to lose. This is the story of normal people trying to survive, love, have fun, dance, cry, be a friend, have adventures. Trying to make moments worth remembering, utilizing every resource we have for an attempt to co-exist with our reality. College students, doctors, architects, musicians, artists, actors, poets… We are all connected in a big circle, trying to survive here with minimum resources and hoping to get out of here as soon as possible. Sharing a dream about a life with electricity, good food, clean streets, decent jobs, good health care, freedom of speech, safety, and warm houses.
These are our lives.
