SUMMARY:DANÍEL HJÁLMTÝSSON IN CONCERT\, Daníel Hjálmtýsson - IS | Live Concert
DESCRIPTION:Daníel Hjálmtýsson is an Icelandic musician known for his neo-goth rock style. He gained attention with his debut single “Birds” in early 2020. His music is characterized by dark\, atmospheric tones and introspective lyrics. \nIcelandic artist Daníel Hjálmtýsson started his relationship with Romania on a playground roughly three decades ago\, when stumbling upon the Romanian national football jersey. As a fan of Hagi and the mysterious landscapes and folk klore of the region\, Daníel felt there was a connection made and history would unfold a destiny. Visiting the country with his band in the summer of 2023\, Daníel shook locals in Bucharest\, Brașov and Cluj Napoca with performances in Control Club and at TIFF\, introducing his debut LP\, Labyrinthia. After the tour Daníel and his band visited the legendary radio station KEXP to perform a series of songs live on air and in house as a showcase of Icelandic music. A true pilgrimage of rock n roll. \nDaníel and his band are now putting the final touches on their sophomore album in the studio of fellow Icelandic musicians\, Of Monsters and Men. Showcasing the brooding atmosphere of the still untitled second LP\, “Mirror\, Mirror” will be it´s first single\, released in October of 2024. A music video will accompany the single and will be filmed and produced in Romania by Miluță Flueraș. \nAs part of the introduction to the new material\, Daníel will perform a very special and intimate show as part of Bucharest Photofest. Letting the audience into his songwriting state with a performance of the songs bare and naked as they came to be. The new album is expected for release in April of 2025.

SUMMARY:SHORT & MEDIUM FILMS SCREENINGS / BPF.SELECTION Collective / film screening
DESCRIPTION:ANI DULCI AMĂRUI\,\nMargaux Basch – FR/Film Screening \nIn Viișoara\, a small village in Romania\, the old school is closed\, abandoned. Young adults come back to that place and remembers their teenage years. \nMargaux Basch is a documentary filmmaker. After completing a master’s degree in digital art at the National College of Art in Dublin\, she graduated from INA in documentary writing and directing in 2021. She has directed around ten short films and also works as an editor and assistant director. In her latest project\, Bitter Sweet Years\, she collaborates with Romanian teenagers on the theme of coming of age. \nCATCH\,\nShingyu Kang – KP/Film Screening \nA college student majoring in photography roams the city to take new photos in her daily life. \nShingyu Kang is a photographer and film director in South Korea. \nAfter majoring in film directing at Seoul Institute of the Arts\, He has won awards or competed at several international and South Korea national film festivals\, and has exhibited photography in various venues. \nHe has been working with photography for a long time\, believing he can create powerful messages in images by combining nature\, humans\, and the placement of objects. \nPHOTOAUTOMAT\,\nFilm Screening \nVintage photo booths can be found throughout the city of Berlin\, standing out as strange mechanical monoliths that are both easy to spot and yet somehow still overlooked. They offer a unique experience that diverges significantly from modern photography and smartphone culture by not allowing users to preview their own image or to know the exact moment in which the photograph will be taken. This element of surprise and mystery shifts the focus from appearance to the overall experience and offers a refreshing break from the pressure to present a perfect self-image. \nGloria Regonesi is a filmmaker and film editor active across Italy\, Germany\, and the UK. Her poetry films and video essays delve into the perception of space and the emotional resonance of places\, while also addressing broader themes such as language and perception. Her work often challenges a reconsideration of how we understand reality and how we interpret and interact with the environment. \nObservation of capitalism and capitalist society serve as a backdrop for her audiovisual pieces\, characterized by haptic elements and an innovative and experimental approach to editing. \nTHE MELTING AGE\,\nAlfonso Rodriguez – ES / Film Screening \nFrom hot to cold. \nIt all seems like a grotesque game we force ourselves to play—this unprecedented lunacy. In Greenland and Antarctica\, melting ice caused by warming is making the planet’s sea levels rise while cooling ocean currents that\, in turn\, influence wildlife and ecosystems. An excess of salt water contrasts with the waste of scarce drinking water aquifers: we use four liters of water to make one plastic bottle containing the same liquid\, and this is quite a moderate proportion compared to other products. \nThe poles are melting\, and that has a huge negative impact on us. Yet human beings insist on seeing this differently. The accessible territory that will emerge from under the ice of the gigantic Greenland and Antarctic landmasses will become new areas to exploit previously untouched natural resources\, especially oil and gas—the same resources that\, paradoxically\, have caused the ice to melt\, enriching a few while driving the vast majority of people into poverty. \nThis lunacy that no one understands but everyone accepts with resignation. And above all\, selfishly: our potential downfall and that of future generations\, which we have brought upon ourselves.\nAnthropogenic climate change is already a proven fact. It is the consequence of global warming caused by the human race. \nMajor international conferences\, bringing together almost every country in the world\, discuss how to tackle the situation\, how to mitigate its effects\, where global responsibility lies\, and the near future of our planet. \nBut it matters little whether we meet with good intentions or whether certain measures or agreements are binding. What is truly important is that no one seems to be taking the first step—a step in a more sustainable direction\, one that is more careful with the mass use of the planet’s limited natural resources. \nWill we exploit them until the Earth breathes its last breath? \nIf this is not what we want\, we must act now. \n“The Melting Age” is a journey through over 30 countries on seven continents\, showing places and situations that demonstrate the causes and consequences of the climate crisis—what we might gain and\, at the same time\, what we could lose. \nUsing photographs taken at the end of the 20th century and throughout the 21st\, along with an astonishing soundtrack\, the aim is to narrate how humanity’s great challenge in the coming decades is being tackled and how the climate crisis has been with us for a long time. We should not be surprised now. \nWHERE THE SUN DISAPPEARS\,\nd. Jeoffrey Guillemard – FR/MX/ Film Screening \nThousands of enthusiasts gathered for a total solar eclipse. During the 4 minutes and 20 seconds of darkness\, Irma Arellanes Hernandez shared with the world the story of her son’s disappearance. She is part of the group “The Lost Treasures\,” composed of mothers whose sons have been abducted by drug cartels. She transformed the eclipse into a metaphor for their daily lives. \nFOTOREVOLTE\,\nJule Körperich – GER/Film Screening \nFotorevolte explores a world where digital storage is maxed out\, bringing all our photos and videos to life. People get lost in a flood of images—celebrities\, logos\, and places—blurring the line between reality and virtuality. \nThe animated film mixes around 1\,000 visuals that clash and blend together\, while the soundtrack is created using a light-sound synthesizer\, enhancing the surreal chaos. \nFotorevolte tells of the moment when the world’s available storage capacity is exhausted. All digitally stored photographs and films come to life. People are displaced from their reality by photos of sights and celebrities\, logos\, and film characters. A bizarre competition unfolds between cleaning up and the manifestation of ever-new images\, until the boundary between the real and virtual world turns completely blurred. When finally the Internet overflows\, the world sinks into a mishmash of pixels. \nIn Fotorevolte\, the question of the influence of always available real and fictional images on the world is turned upside down and taken ad absurdum. The animated film combines around 1\,000 drawings\, photos\, graphics\, and videos\, whose different visual languages fight for space\, overlap\, and mix. In line with this approach\, music and sounds were created by transforming the film images with a light-sound synthesizer.

SUMMARY:UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné): Agroecology and feminism in Guinea Bissau + KITE ZO A: LEAVE THE BONES | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné): agroecology and feminism in Guinea Bissau\nd. Iara Lee\, BR / BI | Film Screening \nIn the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau\, this thought-provoking film takes you on a journey that follows brave local women who challenge patriarchy by building institutions that promote self-sufficiency through agroecology. They also defy social norms by standing up against female genital mutilation and rejecting forced marriage. Carrying forward the legacy of Amílcar Cabral\, the Bissau-Guinean independence leader who placed women’s rights at the center of the struggle for liberation\, the women of a rising generation are taking their power back. \nKITE ZO A: LEAVE THE BONES\nd. Kaveh Nabatian – CA/HT | Film screening \nIn 1791\, in Haiti\, Dutty Boukman presided over a Vodou ritual in Bois-Caïman that led to the creation of the first Black republic. Since then\, rituals of transformation and artistic expression have been at the core of a thriving culture as the country faces foreign oppression\, poverty\, and natural disasters. “Kite Zo A” is a sensorial film about rituals in Haiti\, from ancient to modern\, made in collaboration with poets\, dancers\, musicians\, fishermen\, daredevil rollerbladers\, and Vodou priests\, set to poetry by Wood-Jerry Gabriel. \nNabatian has made a beautiful film that is an act of faith and love for a country and its people. To live in Haiti is an act of rebellion against entropy\, cultural decay\, natural disasters\, and human failings. In Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones\, Nabatian paints a hopeful picture of where the fiercely irrepressible Haitian people came from. – Film Threat \nKaveh Nabatian’s thrilling film Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones combines dance and politics into a furious conflagration that is equal parts history\, observational documentary and something more ineffable. The result is an experiential film that defies easy classification. -The Tyee\, Dorothy Woodend \nThis film has such a mind blowing collection of sights and sounds that it’s kind of like watching a Werner Herzog documentary that was on a crazed mix of acid and speed. SUMMARY:FROM VISION TO ESSENCE: THE METAMORPHOSIS OF PERSONAL STYLE IN PHOTOGRAPHY\, Miluță Flueraș - RO | Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In an era where technology is redefining the boundaries of imagination\, personal style becomes the unmistakable signature of every artist. In this workshop\, we will explore the winding path of visual evolution\, from early fragmented attempts to expressive maturity. Each frame will serve as a pretext for dialogue about technique and emotion\, between clarity and ambiguity. We will discuss how external influences and bold experimentation can shape each photographer’s unique perspective. \nBy delving into the emotional subtleties within each image\, we will understand how technology can amplify the artist’s inner voice without overpowering it\, becoming instead a silent partner in the creative process. We invite you on a photographic journey guided by emotion and intuition\, where the story behind each image matters more than technical perfection\, and the evolution of personal style is an act of continuous transformation.

SUMMARY:The Sleeping Land | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Price: 25 Lei \nOne hundred years have passed since the Czarist regime was overthrown by the Russian Revolution of 1917. \nYet one hundred and thirteen years have gone by since the Trans-Siberian railway line was inaugurated: almost 10\,000 km from Moscow down to eastern Asian Vladivostok bordering the Sea of Japan. In this enormous geographic and human context overlapped by the current Russian social fabric\, the authors of this independent documentary film lead us through simple\, melancholic\, mundane\, or dramatic stories using the train as a metaphor. In essence: the journey through life itself. \nAn intimate\, epic voyage in which the two documentalists do not intend to thoroughly map modern day Russian society but to paint a much more subtle landscape of personal experiences drawn from the people they encounter daily. These are the protagonists of this incredible adventure describing fragments of their past and present lives and guessing at what the future may hold for them. They speak directly to the camera\, reaching out to the spectator\, sharing their joys and sorrows. All this takes place in the Russian taiga during a harsh and bitter Siberian winter. Nothing else except the forests and the occasional villages and cities in the middle of nowhere.

SUMMARY:PASSENGERS\, CÉSAR DEZFULI\, ES-IR | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2016\, César Dezfuli spends three weeks on board the Iuventa\, a former fishing boat operated by the German NGO Jugend Retter\, where he witnesses the rescue vessel assist people risking their lives on the central Mediterranean migration route\, the overseas crossing from Libya to Italy. \nOn August 1st\, 118 people are rescued from a rubber dinghy drifting 20 nautical miles off the coast of Libya. Dezfuli photographs all the passengers on the boat minutes after their rescue\, in an attempt to attach names and faces to this reality\, to humanize this tragedy. \nTheir faces\, their looks\, the marks on their bodies\, their clothes or the absence of them\, reflect the mood and physical state in which they were in a moment that had already marked their lives forever. \nShortly afterwards\, they disembark in Italy\, in the Sicilian port of Pozzallo. \nCésar Dezvuli\, born in 1991 in Madrid\, Spain\, in a context of cultural mixture given his Spanish-Iranian origins\, Cesar Dezfuli is a journalist and documentary photographer whose work often explores themes related to migration\, identity\, and human rights. \nSelf-taught in photography and having learned the profession as a journalist in various newsrooms\, Dezfuli’s assignments and personal projects have taken him to document diferent realities worldwide\, from covering the elections in Kenya\, Rwanda and Kosovo\, to documenting families which have gone against China’s one-child policy. Since 2015\, his focus has been on the migrant crisis at the borders of Europe\, with a special focus on the Central Mediterranean migration route. In 2016\, Dezfuli began working on his most renowned project\, “Passengers\,” with which he aims to question the visual representation of migration.

SUMMARY:Eddy’s War\, d. Joost van der Valk (NL) | Film screening w/ Q/A
DESCRIPTION:Price: 25 lei \nWith the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Romania. \nFor four seasons\, Eddy van Wessel travels along the Ukrainian frontlines. As the most acclaimed Dutch war photographer for three decades now\, he still seeks to capture the ultimate image – one that encapsulates the entire conflict\, making all the struggles\, traumas\, and setbacks he has endured worthwhile. Filmmaker Joost van der Valk (known for “Satudarah – One Blood”) shadows him\,documenting how Van Wessel experiences and captures the war through encounters and interactions with Ukrainians. However\, on the other side of the lens\, one is not immune to the war’s suffering. How does one function as a photographer in the surreal reality of war?\nJoost van der Valk is the only Dutch documentary filmmaker to have won both an EMMY and a British Academy Award (BAFTA) for his work. In addition\, he has been nominated for a Golden Calf\, the IDFA DocU Award and twice for both the Prix d’Europa and the Royal Television Award (RTS). He also won the Amnesty International Documentary Award\, the One World Award and the Rory Peck Sony Award for his camera work\, among many other awards and honors.

SUMMARY:AS WE CROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GARDEN\, d. Ameen Abo Kaseem - PS/SY | FIlm Screening
DESCRIPTION:In late 2018 war was over on the streets of Damascus – there were no more gunfights\, bombs\, mortar shells\, snipers. Life seemed like going back to normal. A whole generation had hopes for change\, for a better future\, and we were ready to start our fight against (for?) life. But soon it turned out to just be a beautiful unrealistic dream\, reality hit hard. The economy fell apart\, prices went through the roof\, there were no jobs\, people were struggling to survive. After eight years of war\, escaping death on the daily\, seeing all of our friends and family immigrating\, moving through a ton of houses\, after all of that\, that was the moment we stopped caring any more. We started living day per day\, no future plans\, no remorse\, living with nothing to lose. This is the story of normal people trying to survive\, love\, have fun\, dance\, cry\, be a friend\, have adventures. Trying to make moments worth remembering\, utilizing every resource we have for an attempt to co-exist with our reality. College students\, doctors\, architects\, musicians\, artists\, actors\, poets… We are all connected in a big circle\, trying to survive here with minimum resources and hoping to get out of here as soon as possible. Sharing a dream about a life with electricity\, good food\, clean streets\, decent jobs\, good health care\, freedom of speech\, safety\, and warm houses.\nThese are our lives.

DESCRIPTION:ARTIST TALK HENRI BLOMMERS FOLLOWED BY PANEL TALK ‘ON THE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT OF (EXPERIMENTAL) PHOTOGRAPHY’ – 11:45 – 12:45\nHenri Blommers (NL)\, panel: Stefan Dinu (RO)\, Razvan Neagoe (RO). Moderator Ioana Cobzaru\, NL (curator and visual artist). \nHenri Blommers is a Dutch fine art photographer working both digitally and analog\, with multiple cameras\, incorporating stitching\, collage and other techniques in his practice. At Bucharest Photofest Henri is showing a selection of 20 images from his experimental photography. Over the past decade\, environmental issues have been the central focus of his artistic practice. This collection of images is drawn from a series of projects in which he explores and visualizes the effects of climate change\, industrial farming\, and his own role as both a consumer and gardener in relation to nature. \nOne of the pressing issues he highlights is salinization\, a process that reduces soil fertility. Already\, 20 percent of the world’s agricultural land is affected\, forcing farmers to cultivate alternative crops. This problem stems from monoculture practices\, climate change\, and the persistent presence of fertilizers and pesticides that accumulate in the soil. \nBlommers also draws attention to possible solutions for regenerating nature: establishing field margins around farms\, creating interconnected landscapes\, reducing pesticide use\, adopting composting practices\, transitioning towards plant-based diets\, improving environmental education in schools and modifying crops to withstand the challenges brought about by climate change. \nPANEL TALK ‘ON STORYTELLING’ – 12:45 – 13:30\nSpeaker: Camila Cavalcante (Brazil/UK) – researcher\, educator and award-winning visual artist. Panel: Marja Kjartans\, visual artist. Moderator Ioana Cobzaru\, NL (curator and visual artist). \nThe panel talk ‘On storytelling’ is highlighting the power of visual tools such as the photography and film in revealing stories\, contributing substantially to an open discussion about topics that are delicate or rather difficult to approach. Storytelling engages the audience in a journey\, packing the message into visual stories that raise awareness\, inspire and make it easier to discuss the very essence that oftentimes seems to hard to point out to in a more traditional way. \nWe invited the amazing visual artist Camila Cavalcante to share with us about her passion for photography\, feminism and activism. She worked on a long-time project in her home country (Brazil) and also published a book\, entitled ‘For the lives of all women/Pela vida das mulheres’. With the storytelling around the women who underwent abortion\, which is still illegal in Brazil\, Camila succeeds in making the topic open to discussion. Her project is taking about the stories of these women\, who even put themselves in danger by talking to Camila about what they went through. The artist is also photographing herself with each of the protagonists\, in a meaningful pose that is not only showing resilience\, but also determination. \nPANEL TALK ‘ON FESTIVALS’ – 14:00 – 15:00\nSpeakers: Dr. Ileana Selejan\, UK (co-curator BredaPhoto festival 2024) and Dr. Pablo Giori\, Spain (founder and co-director of Experimental Photo Festival Barcelona)\, moderator Ioana Cobzaru\, NL (curator and visual artist) \nThe panel talk ‘On festivals’ aims to shed light on the rather complex structure and educational purpose of photography festivals\, alongside the multiple exposure opportunities that a festival creates for emerging talent and established photographers. Festivals are in many ways different from the more traditional ways of exhibiting the work of visual artists in museums and galleries\, excelling in encouraging the dialogue between artists and the audience. In this panel talk we will hear more about the opinion of two experts who have experience with working in a festival environment and their ideas about the educational role of photography festivals. \nON CONVERSATION > CÉSAR DEZFULI – 15:15 – 16:00\nCésar Dezfuli – ES/IR | Lecture \nWe are pleased to invite you to an open conversation with César Dezvuli\, a Spanish-Iranian journalist and documentary photographer whose work delves into some of today’s most pressing issues: migration\, identity\, and human rights. Born in Madrid and self-taught in photography\, César has built a career through his journalistic work\, documenting a wide range of realities across the globe. From covering elections in Kenya\, Rwanda\, and Kosovo to exploring the effects of China’s one-child policy\, his work tells powerful stories of global significance. \nSince 2015\, César has focused his lens on the European migrant crisis\, with a particular interest in the Central Mediterranean migration route. His most recognized project\, Passengers\, launched in 2016\, challenges the way migration is visually represented and offers a deeper understanding of the individuals behind the headlines. \nIn this open discussion\, César will share the experiences behind his impactful projects\, the challenges of documenting human rights issues\, and his approach to storytelling. Come be part of this candid conversation and gain insight into the power of visual journalism in today’s world. \nON CONVERSATION > JOOST VAN DER VALK – 16:00 – 16:45\nD. Joost Van Der Valk- NL | Lecture \nWe are thrilled to invite you to an inspiring open conversation with Joost van der Valk\, one of the most acclaimed documentary filmmakers in the industry today. As the only Dutch filmmaker to have won both an EMMY and a British Academy Award (BAFTA)\, Joost has established himself as a powerful voice in documentary filmmaking\, bringing to light stories that matter. \nWith a diverse portfolio that spans international collaborations with renowned channels such as BBC\, Al Jazeera\, National Geographic\, and HBO\, his work has captivated audiences worldwide. His groundbreaking documentary Teledoc Satudarah – One Blood remains one of the most-watched documentaries in Dutch television history\, showcasing his ability to engage viewers with compelling narratives. \nJoost’s recent directorial projects include gripping series such as Narcowars for Disney+\, Make or Break for Apple TV+\, and critically acclaimed titles like Drug Lords\, Dope\, and Drive to Survive for Netflix. His fearless exploration of complex topics\, including gangs and criminal networks\, has taken him to conflict zones around the globe\, including Somalia\, Iraq\, and the Brazilian favelas. \nIn this open talk\, Joost will share his experiences and insights from his remarkable career\, discussing the challenges of filming in conflict zones\, the importance of storytelling in documentary filmmaking\, and his creative process. This is an incredible opportunity to engage with one of the best in the field and gain a deeper understanding of the power of documentary film.

SUMMARY:SHARE\, TAG OR DYE AGAIN\, Collective | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Our last stop for the STD EW traveling installation is back home\, in the basement of Pe Baricade\, in the middle of Bucharest. \nShare\, Tag or Dye is that place where social media meets the tangible. We invited the whole world into this\, since social media can instrument it so easily (and we wanted the best of both worlds!). Through two sessions of open call\, more than 400 people from all over the world joined our analogue social network and together we hacked the idea of open call. Now we reached the third edition with another 200 entries from all over the world. Together\, we turned it into a beautiful collaborative platform that knows no gender\, country\, religion\, medium and well\, no preconceptions or judgements of any kind really. All who join us contributed with a link from their social media feeds\, to be brought into matter using the cyanotype\, a technique based on iron salts that are UV sensitive and yields a deep blue print. The end result is an immersive cyanotype installation much like an analogue and tangible feed. \nThe Opening is on 15 October at 20:00 at Pe Baricade\, Radu Voda 23A.\nShare\, Tag or Dye Again project is lovingly manned by Allkimik Photographic Association in partnership with @marginal.ro and @alternativephotography_com respectively @camera.cluj @vagon.ro \, CETAL and @experimentalphotofestival \nThe project is co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund (AFCN).

SUMMARY:I'M NOT EVERYTHING I WANT TO BE\, d. Klára Tasovská (CZ / SLO / AU) | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Price: 25 lei \nAfter the Soviet invasion of Prague\, a young female photographer strives to breakfree from the constraints of Czechoslovakian normalization and embarks on\na wild journey towards freedom\, capturing her experiences through thousands\nof photographs. \nFrom the darkness come flashes of bright light\, followed by fragments of black-and-white images that appear in quick succession. An invitation to a prestigious photography exhibition means that seventy-year-old Libuše Jarcovjáková has to turn on her photo scanner. She has been waiting for such an invitation for the last 50 years. All that time\, she’s been trying to be a recognized photographer\, but no one really cared. Now\, she has to choose photographs that represent her and her work. But what should she show the world? Who is she\, really? \nThe story of Libuše begins in normalization-era Prague\, when she sets off\, with her camera around her neck\, on a journey through “islands of freedom.” She heads off into the night streets of the communist capital city for a night shift in a printing house\, to spit-and-sawdust pubs\, to communities of Roma people\, and the newly-arrived Vietnamese and Cubans… Snapshots of nudity\, sex\, and alcohol\, but also boredom and the straitjacket of normalization. Her personal journey of emancipation and her search for her own sexual identity\, captured through thousands of analog images\, is interrupted by a murder. As the Czechoslovakian police take an interest in her photographs from the semi-legal gay T-club\, Libuše decides to enter into a fake marriage and moves to Berlin. \nThe new world is full of obstacles. After a car accident\, Libuše ends up in a hospital with a broken leg. Once she recovers\, she uses her last bit of money to fly to Tokyo\, where\, with the help of her friend\, she miraculously breaks through as a fashion photographer. But it’s not the life she wants to live. Libuše returns to Berlin\, and after the fall of the Iron Curtain\, heads back to Prague. \nMeanwhile\, she keeps a record of her everyday struggles\, identity exploration\, corporeality\, relationships\, and emotions in her pictures and journals. The result is tens of thousands of negatives\, preserving the transformation of body and soul over decades. \nWhat is Libuše looking for beyond the mirror? \n“We tell the story of Libuše Jarcovjáková conceptually only through her raw photograph. The uniqueness of Libuše’s pictures does not only lie in the quality of isolated\, individual shots and single moments. The impressiveness of her photographs is based on quantity\, seriality\, compact sequences capturing time\, transformation\, and even a micro-story of a situation similar to a comic strip.” – Klára Tasovská

SUMMARY:THE POWER OF SPORTS\, UNHCR | Collective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:When people are forced to flee violence\, conflict or persecution\, they face a period of exile and uncertainty that can last for years. As they seek to rebuild their lives\, sport can be a source of hope and empowerment\, and a path to physical and mental wellbeing.\nSport can help people to escape their everyday worries\, restore a sense of fun and enjoyment\, and provide some normality amid the disruption. But it is more than that – sport gives refugees the chance to heal\, develop and grow\, and contributes to new futures full of purpose\, pride and achievement. And it can bring displaced people and their host communities closer together\, breaking down barriers\, sparking new friendships and facilitating integration and inclusion. \nThis exhibition\, organized by UNHCR\, the UN Refugee Agency\, demonstrates the power of sport to transform the lives of the forcibly displaced – whether as a vehicle for building lasting friendships\, changing negative attitudes\, and enhancing social cohesion\, or taking the best and most talented all the way to the Olympic Games.

SUMMARY:RESILIENCE. TAKING THE SHOCK\, Collective | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As the Larousse dictionary reminds us\, “resilience” can be applied to many fields\, whether it is mechanics\, ecology\, information technology\, or even human behavior. Whether it refers to the “mechanical characteristic defining a material’s resistance to shocks\,” the “ability of a system to continue functioning\, even in case of failure\,” or the “capacity of an ecosystem to recover after external disruption\,” the idea remains the same: resilience is about being able to take a hit and move forward. \nThrough the lens\, resilience evokes moments of strength\, vulnerability\, or hope. Whether documenting social issues or the beauty of nature\, photography can reveal the resilience of our environment: the seasons change\, but life endures. \nAn exhibition made in partnership with Wipplay Paris.

Her work has been exhibited in Japan and internationally\, at The Museum of Modern Art\, Saitama\, Japan (2023\, 2020-2021)\, The National Museum of Contemporary Art\, Romania ( 2020)\, in Hoi An\, Vietnam ( 2019)\, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum\, Tokyo\, Japan (2019) and at Chambord\, Paris\, France (2017) to name a few. \n‘Vessels of Light’ is an impressive\, intimate and well documented body of work that has recently been realized by the artist during her one year field work in Romania\, photographing and researching traditions and daily life. The curator team of Bucharest Photofest was really touched by the level of sensitivity and the strong sense of belonging expressed by ‘Vessels of Light’. The project is clearly showing that the artist has immersed herself in the culture and the social vibe of her second home country and that she was able to get in front of her lens the very essence of the Romanian soul throughout the four seasons. Her work feels documentary\, but bears also a beautiful touch of fine art and a strong sense of poetry.

SUMMARY:IF PLANTS COULD SPEAK\, Henri Blommers - NL | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Curator: Ioana Cobzaru (NL-RO). \nWith the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Romania. \nOver the past decade\, environmental issues have been the central focus of Henri Blommers’ artistic practice. This collection of images is drawn from a series of projects in which he explores and visualises the effects of climate change\, industrial farming\, and his own role as both a consumer and gardener in relation to nature. \nBlommers replicates the processes of climate change by subjecting film to unconventional treatments: immersing it in hot water infused with extracts of invasive species\, spraying fertiliser on developed film\, and using anti-weed chemicals during development. In Switzerland\, he collaborated with the local community\, seeking their guidance on areas where biodiversity was under threat. Following local advice\, he took water samples from locations with high levels of Roundup contamination\, incorporating these into his creative process. \nOne of the pressing issues he highlights is salinisation\, a process that reduces soil fertility. Already\, 20 per cent of the world’s agricultural land is affected\, forcing farmers to cultivate alternative crops. This problem stems from monoculture practices\, climate change\, and the persistent presence of fertilisers and pesticides that accumulate in the soil. \nBlommers also draws attention to possible solutions for regenerating nature: establishing field margins around farms\, creating interconnected landscapes\, reducing pesticide use\, adopting composting practices\, transitioning towards plant-based diets\, improving environmental education in schools and modifying crops to withstand the challenges brought about by climate change. \nThis body of work serves as a reflection on the complex and urgent environmental challenges facing the world today\, while also gesturing towards potential paths forward.

SUMMARY:RESILIENCE. AN ICELANDIC PERSPECTIVE\, Sandra Mjoll Jonsdottir / Yael BC / Maria Kjartans / Kristjan Maack / Telma Har - IS | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Resilience\, an Icelandic Perspective” delves into the theme of resilience through the works of three remarkable Icelandic artists. Sandra Mjoll Jonsdottir\, Yael BC\, Maria Kjartans\, Kristjan Maack\, and Telma Harthese explore the relationship between humanity and the rugged Icelandic environment\, where survival and adaptation are central. Their collective works weave a narrative that reflects the raw power of nature and the resilience required to thrive within it. From Jónsdóttir’s intimate portrayal of isolation\, to Kjartans’ interdisciplinary approach blending cultural resilience\, and Maack’s iconic landscapes capturing Iceland’s untamed beauty\, each artist offers a unique perspective on how nature\, culture\, and identity shape resilience in the face of change. Together\, their works embody the spirit of Iceland\, where endurance and adaptation are essential to life.

SUMMARY:Infiore\, Joakim Kocjancic (SE) | exhibition
DESCRIPTION:With the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Romania. \nOver the past few years\, spanning from 2019 to 2023\, my artistic exploration has been centered around a personal journey in Bucharest. From the moment I arrived there\, I felt an unexplainable connection to the city. It welcomed me warmly\, allowing me to roam its streets with ease\, revealing its authentic and raw beauty. There was no facade\, no pretense. \nAs I delved deeper into the city\, I began to uncover its layers. Yet\, it was the younger generation that truly captured my attention with their unique attitude\, interactions\, and fashion. They stood out in the crowd\, and I was compelled to capture their spirit. It was both a refreshing departure from my usual subjects and a challenge to approach them. \nThe tension in these images mirrors the inner struggle I faced with each encounter and situation; yet\, it also captures the vibrant energy of youth\, the essence of life in an urban environment\, and the magic of the unpredictable. \nI found myself seeking doors to an alternate reality\, one that existed beyond the facade of everyday life. It was an exploration of the unknown\, a quest for the extraordinary within the ordinary—like a personal odyssey in a city that transcends cultural boundaries and becomes universal. \nAs Fernando Pessoa wrote\, “What we see is not what we see\, but who we are.”
