SUMMARY:SHORT & MEDIUM FILMS SCREENINGS / BPF.SELECTION Collective / film screening
DESCRIPTION:ANI DULCI AMĂRUI\,\nMargaux Basch – FR/Film Screening \nIn Viișoara\, a small village in Romania\, the old school is closed\, abandoned. Young adults come back to that place and remembers their teenage years. \nMargaux Basch is a documentary filmmaker. After completing a master’s degree in digital art at the National College of Art in Dublin\, she graduated from INA in documentary writing and directing in 2021. She has directed around ten short films and also works as an editor and assistant director. In her latest project\, Bitter Sweet Years\, she collaborates with Romanian teenagers on the theme of coming of age. \nCATCH\,\nShingyu Kang – KP/Film Screening \nA college student majoring in photography roams the city to take new photos in her daily life. \nShingyu Kang is a photographer and film director in South Korea. \nAfter majoring in film directing at Seoul Institute of the Arts\, He has won awards or competed at several international and South Korea national film festivals\, and has exhibited photography in various venues. \nHe has been working with photography for a long time\, believing he can create powerful messages in images by combining nature\, humans\, and the placement of objects. \nPHOTOAUTOMAT\,\nFilm Screening \nVintage photo booths can be found throughout the city of Berlin\, standing out as strange mechanical monoliths that are both easy to spot and yet somehow still overlooked. They offer a unique experience that diverges significantly from modern photography and smartphone culture by not allowing users to preview their own image or to know the exact moment in which the photograph will be taken. This element of surprise and mystery shifts the focus from appearance to the overall experience and offers a refreshing break from the pressure to present a perfect self-image. \nGloria Regonesi is a filmmaker and film editor active across Italy\, Germany\, and the UK. Her poetry films and video essays delve into the perception of space and the emotional resonance of places\, while also addressing broader themes such as language and perception. Her work often challenges a reconsideration of how we understand reality and how we interpret and interact with the environment. \nObservation of capitalism and capitalist society serve as a backdrop for her audiovisual pieces\, characterized by haptic elements and an innovative and experimental approach to editing. \nTHE MELTING AGE\,\nAlfonso Rodriguez – ES / Film Screening \nFrom hot to cold. \nIt all seems like a grotesque game we force ourselves to play—this unprecedented lunacy. In Greenland and Antarctica\, melting ice caused by warming is making the planet’s sea levels rise while cooling ocean currents that\, in turn\, influence wildlife and ecosystems. An excess of salt water contrasts with the waste of scarce drinking water aquifers: we use four liters of water to make one plastic bottle containing the same liquid\, and this is quite a moderate proportion compared to other products. \nThe poles are melting\, and that has a huge negative impact on us. Yet human beings insist on seeing this differently. The accessible territory that will emerge from under the ice of the gigantic Greenland and Antarctic landmasses will become new areas to exploit previously untouched natural resources\, especially oil and gas—the same resources that\, paradoxically\, have caused the ice to melt\, enriching a few while driving the vast majority of people into poverty. \nThis lunacy that no one understands but everyone accepts with resignation. And above all\, selfishly: our potential downfall and that of future generations\, which we have brought upon ourselves.\nAnthropogenic climate change is already a proven fact. It is the consequence of global warming caused by the human race. \nMajor international conferences\, bringing together almost every country in the world\, discuss how to tackle the situation\, how to mitigate its effects\, where global responsibility lies\, and the near future of our planet. \nBut it matters little whether we meet with good intentions or whether certain measures or agreements are binding. What is truly important is that no one seems to be taking the first step—a step in a more sustainable direction\, one that is more careful with the mass use of the planet’s limited natural resources. \nWill we exploit them until the Earth breathes its last breath? \nIf this is not what we want\, we must act now. \n“The Melting Age” is a journey through over 30 countries on seven continents\, showing places and situations that demonstrate the causes and consequences of the climate crisis—what we might gain and\, at the same time\, what we could lose. \nUsing photographs taken at the end of the 20th century and throughout the 21st\, along with an astonishing soundtrack\, the aim is to narrate how humanity’s great challenge in the coming decades is being tackled and how the climate crisis has been with us for a long time. We should not be surprised now. \nWHERE THE SUN DISAPPEARS\,\nd. Jeoffrey Guillemard – FR/MX/ Film Screening \nThousands of enthusiasts gathered for a total solar eclipse. During the 4 minutes and 20 seconds of darkness\, Irma Arellanes Hernandez shared with the world the story of her son’s disappearance. She is part of the group “The Lost Treasures\,” composed of mothers whose sons have been abducted by drug cartels. She transformed the eclipse into a metaphor for their daily lives. \nFOTOREVOLTE\,\nJule Körperich – GER/Film Screening \nFotorevolte explores a world where digital storage is maxed out\, bringing all our photos and videos to life. People get lost in a flood of images—celebrities\, logos\, and places—blurring the line between reality and virtuality. \nThe animated film mixes around 1\,000 visuals that clash and blend together\, while the soundtrack is created using a light-sound synthesizer\, enhancing the surreal chaos. \nFotorevolte tells of the moment when the world’s available storage capacity is exhausted. All digitally stored photographs and films come to life. People are displaced from their reality by photos of sights and celebrities\, logos\, and film characters. A bizarre competition unfolds between cleaning up and the manifestation of ever-new images\, until the boundary between the real and virtual world turns completely blurred. When finally the Internet overflows\, the world sinks into a mishmash of pixels. \nIn Fotorevolte\, the question of the influence of always available real and fictional images on the world is turned upside down and taken ad absurdum. The animated film combines around 1\,000 drawings\, photos\, graphics\, and videos\, whose different visual languages fight for space\, overlap\, and mix. In line with this approach\, music and sounds were created by transforming the film images with a light-sound synthesizer.

SUMMARY:UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné): Agroecology and feminism in Guinea Bissau + KITE ZO A: LEAVE THE BONES | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné): agroecology and feminism in Guinea Bissau\nd. Iara Lee\, BR / BI | Film Screening \nIn the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau\, this thought-provoking film takes you on a journey that follows brave local women who challenge patriarchy by building institutions that promote self-sufficiency through agroecology. They also defy social norms by standing up against female genital mutilation and rejecting forced marriage. Carrying forward the legacy of Amílcar Cabral\, the Bissau-Guinean independence leader who placed women’s rights at the center of the struggle for liberation\, the women of a rising generation are taking their power back. \nKITE ZO A: LEAVE THE BONES\nd. Kaveh Nabatian – CA/HT | Film screening \nIn 1791\, in Haiti\, Dutty Boukman presided over a Vodou ritual in Bois-Caïman that led to the creation of the first Black republic. Since then\, rituals of transformation and artistic expression have been at the core of a thriving culture as the country faces foreign oppression\, poverty\, and natural disasters. “Kite Zo A” is a sensorial film about rituals in Haiti\, from ancient to modern\, made in collaboration with poets\, dancers\, musicians\, fishermen\, daredevil rollerbladers\, and Vodou priests\, set to poetry by Wood-Jerry Gabriel. \nNabatian has made a beautiful film that is an act of faith and love for a country and its people. To live in Haiti is an act of rebellion against entropy\, cultural decay\, natural disasters\, and human failings. In Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones\, Nabatian paints a hopeful picture of where the fiercely irrepressible Haitian people came from. – Film Threat \nKaveh Nabatian’s thrilling film Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones combines dance and politics into a furious conflagration that is equal parts history\, observational documentary and something more ineffable. The result is an experiential film that defies easy classification. -The Tyee\, Dorothy Woodend \nThis film has such a mind blowing collection of sights and sounds that it’s kind of like watching a Werner Herzog documentary that was on a crazed mix of acid and speed. SUMMARY:The Sleeping Land | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Price: 25 Lei \nOne hundred years have passed since the Czarist regime was overthrown by the Russian Revolution of 1917. \nYet one hundred and thirteen years have gone by since the Trans-Siberian railway line was inaugurated: almost 10\,000 km from Moscow down to eastern Asian Vladivostok bordering the Sea of Japan. In this enormous geographic and human context overlapped by the current Russian social fabric\, the authors of this independent documentary film lead us through simple\, melancholic\, mundane\, or dramatic stories using the train as a metaphor. In essence: the journey through life itself. \nAn intimate\, epic voyage in which the two documentalists do not intend to thoroughly map modern day Russian society but to paint a much more subtle landscape of personal experiences drawn from the people they encounter daily. These are the protagonists of this incredible adventure describing fragments of their past and present lives and guessing at what the future may hold for them. They speak directly to the camera\, reaching out to the spectator\, sharing their joys and sorrows. All this takes place in the Russian taiga during a harsh and bitter Siberian winter. Nothing else except the forests and the occasional villages and cities in the middle of nowhere.

SUMMARY:Eddy’s War\, d. Joost van der Valk (NL) | Film screening w/ Q/A
DESCRIPTION:Price: 25 lei \nWith the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Romania. \nFor four seasons\, Eddy van Wessel travels along the Ukrainian frontlines. As the most acclaimed Dutch war photographer for three decades now\, he still seeks to capture the ultimate image – one that encapsulates the entire conflict\, making all the struggles\, traumas\, and setbacks he has endured worthwhile. Filmmaker Joost van der Valk (known for “Satudarah – One Blood”) shadows him\,documenting how Van Wessel experiences and captures the war through encounters and interactions with Ukrainians. However\, on the other side of the lens\, one is not immune to the war’s suffering. How does one function as a photographer in the surreal reality of war?\nJoost van der Valk is the only Dutch documentary filmmaker to have won both an EMMY and a British Academy Award (BAFTA) for his work. In addition\, he has been nominated for a Golden Calf\, the IDFA DocU Award and twice for both the Prix d’Europa and the Royal Television Award (RTS). He also won the Amnesty International Documentary Award\, the One World Award and the Rory Peck Sony Award for his camera work\, among many other awards and honors.

SUMMARY:AS WE CROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GARDEN\, d. Ameen Abo Kaseem - PS/SY | FIlm Screening
DESCRIPTION:In late 2018 war was over on the streets of Damascus – there were no more gunfights\, bombs\, mortar shells\, snipers. Life seemed like going back to normal. A whole generation had hopes for change\, for a better future\, and we were ready to start our fight against (for?) life. But soon it turned out to just be a beautiful unrealistic dream\, reality hit hard. The economy fell apart\, prices went through the roof\, there were no jobs\, people were struggling to survive. After eight years of war\, escaping death on the daily\, seeing all of our friends and family immigrating\, moving through a ton of houses\, after all of that\, that was the moment we stopped caring any more. We started living day per day\, no future plans\, no remorse\, living with nothing to lose. This is the story of normal people trying to survive\, love\, have fun\, dance\, cry\, be a friend\, have adventures. Trying to make moments worth remembering\, utilizing every resource we have for an attempt to co-exist with our reality. College students\, doctors\, architects\, musicians\, artists\, actors\, poets… We are all connected in a big circle\, trying to survive here with minimum resources and hoping to get out of here as soon as possible. Sharing a dream about a life with electricity\, good food\, clean streets\, decent jobs\, good health care\, freedom of speech\, safety\, and warm houses.\nThese are our lives.

SUMMARY:I'M NOT EVERYTHING I WANT TO BE\, d. Klára Tasovská (CZ / SLO / AU) | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Price: 25 lei \nAfter the Soviet invasion of Prague\, a young female photographer strives to breakfree from the constraints of Czechoslovakian normalization and embarks on\na wild journey towards freedom\, capturing her experiences through thousands\nof photographs. \nFrom the darkness come flashes of bright light\, followed by fragments of black-and-white images that appear in quick succession. An invitation to a prestigious photography exhibition means that seventy-year-old Libuše Jarcovjáková has to turn on her photo scanner. She has been waiting for such an invitation for the last 50 years. All that time\, she’s been trying to be a recognized photographer\, but no one really cared. Now\, she has to choose photographs that represent her and her work. But what should she show the world? Who is she\, really? \nThe story of Libuše begins in normalization-era Prague\, when she sets off\, with her camera around her neck\, on a journey through “islands of freedom.” She heads off into the night streets of the communist capital city for a night shift in a printing house\, to spit-and-sawdust pubs\, to communities of Roma people\, and the newly-arrived Vietnamese and Cubans… Snapshots of nudity\, sex\, and alcohol\, but also boredom and the straitjacket of normalization. Her personal journey of emancipation and her search for her own sexual identity\, captured through thousands of analog images\, is interrupted by a murder. As the Czechoslovakian police take an interest in her photographs from the semi-legal gay T-club\, Libuše decides to enter into a fake marriage and moves to Berlin. \nThe new world is full of obstacles. After a car accident\, Libuše ends up in a hospital with a broken leg. Once she recovers\, she uses her last bit of money to fly to Tokyo\, where\, with the help of her friend\, she miraculously breaks through as a fashion photographer. But it’s not the life she wants to live. Libuše returns to Berlin\, and after the fall of the Iron Curtain\, heads back to Prague. \nMeanwhile\, she keeps a record of her everyday struggles\, identity exploration\, corporeality\, relationships\, and emotions in her pictures and journals. The result is tens of thousands of negatives\, preserving the transformation of body and soul over decades. \nWhat is Libuše looking for beyond the mirror? \n“We tell the story of Libuše Jarcovjáková conceptually only through her raw photograph. The uniqueness of Libuše’s pictures does not only lie in the quality of isolated\, individual shots and single moments. The impressiveness of her photographs is based on quantity\, seriality\, compact sequences capturing time\, transformation\, and even a micro-story of a situation similar to a comic strip.” – Klára Tasovská

SUMMARY:MOIMOM\, Hugo Weber (FR) | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The relationship between a French teenage single mother and her son has always been peculiar. The mother\, born in Aubervilliers in 1983\, had a complicated life. Abandoned by her mother with her grandfather and siblings as an infant\, she was initially sent to a foster home and later lived with her grandmother until the age of 16\, when her grandmother passed away. She then moved in with her brother. At 18\, she became pregnant by an abusive man from whom she eventually fled\, while working as a photographer in a small studio in Paris. During the son’s childhood\, their relationship was peaceful despite their precarious conditions. However\, things worsened when the mother fell in love with an Italian man\, leading to a move to Milan.\nAdolescence brought further complications due to the son’s rebellious nature and the mother’s severe aggressive drinking problem\, which resulted in years of estrangement after she expelled him from the house at 19. In 2015\, at the age of 42\, the mother suffered a stroke that caused physical and psychological handicaps\, leaving her with lasting memory issues.\nThe most heartbreaking aspect was seeing the illness strip away her free and proud spirit\, revealing a new\, vulnerable side of her. Photography became a therapeutic tool for both\, helping them accept her new condition and reconnect with her past through notes\, diaries\, and old photographs.\nThis therapeutic approach transformed their relationship\, fostering new emotional connections and dialogue through images from her archives and new ones taken during visits. Photography now deeply connects them\, with the mother\, also a photographer\, understanding and respecting the son’s work.\nThe project aims to explore the son’s origins and the complex\, intense relationship with his mother through photography. For the first time\, he sees his mother as a woman and himself as a son\, not just as individuals.
