SUMMARY:PASSENGERS\, CÉSAR DEZFULI\, ES-IR | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2016\, César Dezfuli spends three weeks on board the Iuventa\, a former fishing boat operated by the German NGO Jugend Retter\, where he witnesses the rescue vessel assist people risking their lives on the central Mediterranean migration route\, the overseas crossing from Libya to Italy. \nOn August 1st\, 118 people are rescued from a rubber dinghy drifting 20 nautical miles off the coast of Libya. Dezfuli photographs all the passengers on the boat minutes after their rescue\, in an attempt to attach names and faces to this reality\, to humanize this tragedy. \nTheir faces\, their looks\, the marks on their bodies\, their clothes or the absence of them\, reflect the mood and physical state in which they were in a moment that had already marked their lives forever. \nShortly afterwards\, they disembark in Italy\, in the Sicilian port of Pozzallo. \nCésar Dezvuli\, born in 1991 in Madrid\, Spain\, in a context of cultural mixture given his Spanish-Iranian origins\, Cesar Dezfuli is a journalist and documentary photographer whose work often explores themes related to migration\, identity\, and human rights. \nSelf-taught in photography and having learned the profession as a journalist in various newsrooms\, Dezfuli’s assignments and personal projects have taken him to document diferent realities worldwide\, from covering the elections in Kenya\, Rwanda and Kosovo\, to documenting families which have gone against China’s one-child policy. Since 2015\, his focus has been on the migrant crisis at the borders of Europe\, with a special focus on the Central Mediterranean migration route. In 2016\, Dezfuli began working on his most renowned project\, “Passengers\,” with which he aims to question the visual representation of migration.

SUMMARY:THE EXPRESSIVENESS OF VULNERABILITY\, Ciprian Măceșaru - RO | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The street is a crucible where a constantly surprising human chromaticity manifests\, always ready to reveal more about intimacy than you might think. On the street\, we are all vulnerable. Even the photographer unveils his vulnerability\, as the chosen subjects also speak about him. Ciprian Măceșaru is attentive to the states of others\, often capturing scenes where different elements communicate with each other\, thus constructing the message. His photography is about emotion\, about fragility and joy\, about social shortcomings\, but also about the beauty of life.

SUMMARY:SHARE\, TAG OR DYE AGAIN\, Collective | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Our last stop for the STD EW traveling installation is back home\, in the basement of Pe Baricade\, in the middle of Bucharest. \nShare\, Tag or Dye is that place where social media meets the tangible. We invited the whole world into this\, since social media can instrument it so easily (and we wanted the best of both worlds!). Through two sessions of open call\, more than 400 people from all over the world joined our analogue social network and together we hacked the idea of open call. Now we reached the third edition with another 200 entries from all over the world. Together\, we turned it into a beautiful collaborative platform that knows no gender\, country\, religion\, medium and well\, no preconceptions or judgements of any kind really. All who join us contributed with a link from their social media feeds\, to be brought into matter using the cyanotype\, a technique based on iron salts that are UV sensitive and yields a deep blue print. The end result is an immersive cyanotype installation much like an analogue and tangible feed. \nThe Opening is on 15 October at 20:00 at Pe Baricade\, Radu Voda 23A.\nShare\, Tag or Dye Again project is lovingly manned by Allkimik Photographic Association in partnership with @marginal.ro and @alternativephotography_com respectively @camera.cluj @vagon.ro \, CETAL and @experimentalphotofestival \nThe project is co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund (AFCN).

SUMMARY:THE POWER OF SPORTS\, UNHCR | Collective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:When people are forced to flee violence\, conflict or persecution\, they face a period of exile and uncertainty that can last for years. As they seek to rebuild their lives\, sport can be a source of hope and empowerment\, and a path to physical and mental wellbeing.\nSport can help people to escape their everyday worries\, restore a sense of fun and enjoyment\, and provide some normality amid the disruption. But it is more than that – sport gives refugees the chance to heal\, develop and grow\, and contributes to new futures full of purpose\, pride and achievement. And it can bring displaced people and their host communities closer together\, breaking down barriers\, sparking new friendships and facilitating integration and inclusion. \nThis exhibition\, organized by UNHCR\, the UN Refugee Agency\, demonstrates the power of sport to transform the lives of the forcibly displaced – whether as a vehicle for building lasting friendships\, changing negative attitudes\, and enhancing social cohesion\, or taking the best and most talented all the way to the Olympic Games.

SUMMARY:RESILIENCE. TAKING THE SHOCK\, Collective | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As the Larousse dictionary reminds us\, “resilience” can be applied to many fields\, whether it is mechanics\, ecology\, information technology\, or even human behavior. Whether it refers to the “mechanical characteristic defining a material’s resistance to shocks\,” the “ability of a system to continue functioning\, even in case of failure\,” or the “capacity of an ecosystem to recover after external disruption\,” the idea remains the same: resilience is about being able to take a hit and move forward. \nThrough the lens\, resilience evokes moments of strength\, vulnerability\, or hope. Whether documenting social issues or the beauty of nature\, photography can reveal the resilience of our environment: the seasons change\, but life endures. \nAn exhibition made in partnership with Wipplay Paris.

SUMMARY:VESSELS OF LIGHT\, Ana Scripcariu-Ochiai - JP-RO | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Curator: Ioana Cobzaru (NL-RO). \nAna Scripcariu-Ochiai (1992) is a visual artist who has family roots in two cultures. She has been born\, raised and educated in Japan\, but she is half Romanian so after her studies she pursued getting in touch with the culture and the people of Romania.Ana is a mixed media artist who performs cultural and anthropological field work\, including documentation of indigenous festivals and folk religions in various parts of Japan and abroad. In recent years she has been involved in the field of primatology as an extension of her work. She graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in Oil Painting at the top of her class and as a valedictorian of the Faculty of Fine Arts\, where she also completed an MA in Global Art Practice. She is now enrolled in a doctoral program in sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited in Japan and internationally\, at The Museum of Modern Art\, Saitama\, Japan (2023\, 2020-2021)\, The National Museum of Contemporary Art\, Romania ( 2020)\, in Hoi An\, Vietnam ( 2019)\, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum\, Tokyo\, Japan (2019) and at Chambord\, Paris\, France (2017) to name a few. \n‘Vessels of Light’ is an impressive\, intimate and well documented body of work that has recently been realized by the artist during her one year field work in Romania\, photographing and researching traditions and daily life. The curator team of Bucharest Photofest was really touched by the level of sensitivity and the strong sense of belonging expressed by ‘Vessels of Light’. The project is clearly showing that the artist has immersed herself in the culture and the social vibe of her second home country and that she was able to get in front of her lens the very essence of the Romanian soul throughout the four seasons. Her work feels documentary\, but bears also a beautiful touch of fine art and a strong sense of poetry.

SUMMARY:IF PLANTS COULD SPEAK\, Henri Blommers - NL | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Curator: Ioana Cobzaru (NL-RO). \nWith the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Romania. \nOver the past decade\, environmental issues have been the central focus of Henri Blommers’ artistic practice. This collection of images is drawn from a series of projects in which he explores and visualises the effects of climate change\, industrial farming\, and his own role as both a consumer and gardener in relation to nature. \nBlommers replicates the processes of climate change by subjecting film to unconventional treatments: immersing it in hot water infused with extracts of invasive species\, spraying fertiliser on developed film\, and using anti-weed chemicals during development. In Switzerland\, he collaborated with the local community\, seeking their guidance on areas where biodiversity was under threat. Following local advice\, he took water samples from locations with high levels of Roundup contamination\, incorporating these into his creative process. \nOne of the pressing issues he highlights is salinisation\, a process that reduces soil fertility. Already\, 20 per cent of the world’s agricultural land is affected\, forcing farmers to cultivate alternative crops. This problem stems from monoculture practices\, climate change\, and the persistent presence of fertilisers and pesticides that accumulate in the soil. \nBlommers also draws attention to possible solutions for regenerating nature: establishing field margins around farms\, creating interconnected landscapes\, reducing pesticide use\, adopting composting practices\, transitioning towards plant-based diets\, improving environmental education in schools and modifying crops to withstand the challenges brought about by climate change. \nThis body of work serves as a reflection on the complex and urgent environmental challenges facing the world today\, while also gesturing towards potential paths forward.

SUMMARY:RESILIENCE. AN ICELANDIC PERSPECTIVE\, Sandra Mjoll Jonsdottir / Yael BC / Maria Kjartans / Kristjan Maack / Telma Har - IS | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Resilience\, an Icelandic Perspective” delves into the theme of resilience through the works of three remarkable Icelandic artists. Sandra Mjoll Jonsdottir\, Yael BC\, Maria Kjartans\, Kristjan Maack\, and Telma Harthese explore the relationship between humanity and the rugged Icelandic environment\, where survival and adaptation are central. Their collective works weave a narrative that reflects the raw power of nature and the resilience required to thrive within it. From Jónsdóttir’s intimate portrayal of isolation\, to Kjartans’ interdisciplinary approach blending cultural resilience\, and Maack’s iconic landscapes capturing Iceland’s untamed beauty\, each artist offers a unique perspective on how nature\, culture\, and identity shape resilience in the face of change. Together\, their works embody the spirit of Iceland\, where endurance and adaptation are essential to life.

SUMMARY:Infiore\, Joakim Kocjancic (SE) | exhibition
DESCRIPTION:With the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Romania. \nOver the past few years\, spanning from 2019 to 2023\, my artistic exploration has been centered around a personal journey in Bucharest. From the moment I arrived there\, I felt an unexplainable connection to the city. It welcomed me warmly\, allowing me to roam its streets with ease\, revealing its authentic and raw beauty. There was no facade\, no pretense. \nAs I delved deeper into the city\, I began to uncover its layers. Yet\, it was the younger generation that truly captured my attention with their unique attitude\, interactions\, and fashion. They stood out in the crowd\, and I was compelled to capture their spirit. It was both a refreshing departure from my usual subjects and a challenge to approach them. \nThe tension in these images mirrors the inner struggle I faced with each encounter and situation; yet\, it also captures the vibrant energy of youth\, the essence of life in an urban environment\, and the magic of the unpredictable. \nI found myself seeking doors to an alternate reality\, one that existed beyond the facade of everyday life. It was an exploration of the unknown\, a quest for the extraordinary within the ordinary—like a personal odyssey in a city that transcends cultural boundaries and becomes universal. \nAs Fernando Pessoa wrote\, “What we see is not what we see\, but who we are.”

SUMMARY:METAPHYSICAL BODY LANDSCAPES\, Anna Laza - RO-CY | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Anna Laza creates beautiful Metaphysical body Landscapes. Her work is prime conceptual photography. This is a creative project that moves beyond simply capturing a scene. It moves itself into the surreal and develops a symbiotic relationship within a sea of emotions and feelings. It’s easy to be fascinated with Anna’s work. She leans into black and white with her Metaphysical Body Landscapes project and finds ways to make the body resemble the land around us.\nShe uses very specific lighting and contrasts to make us consider what parts of nature these photos resemble. At times you feel as if you’re looking at a photo straight from a drone and converted to monochrome. At other times\, you’re transported to some hills in the desert. But throughout the project\, Anna does a fantastic job of keeping us aware of the idea that these are landscapes\, made through the body. It ultimately reminds us of our own connection to nature.\nIn the project “Metaphysical Body Landscapes” Anna Laza transcend the purely physical and touch upon Metaphysical. She invites viewers to contemplate the profound connections between the human body and the world it inhabits\, between the individual and the Cosmos. She ponders the mysteries of our life\, the cycle of birth and death\, showing metaphysical dimensions of our existance.\nDuring shooting women for this project she avoided sexualizing them and even photographing naked body there’ll be no sexual vision in the image\, but only sensual and sophisticated.

SUMMARY:UKRAINE: THOSE WHO STAY BEHIND\, Nicolas Dykmans - BE | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As the war is in its second year and men are starting to be scarce\, there are\, at the rear of the front line\, those who continue to live trying to maintain a semblance of normality. Women waiting for their men\, youth on whom looms the threat of conscription and who are living their adolescence with even more frustration\, anger\, revolt\, and even hatred than they do in peacetime; babushkas and dedushkas who are helping mothers take care of their children; those who are not wearing the uniform because their role in civil society is too important; those who hide; and those who simply are inapt. \nAs I went to Ukraine\, it’s on those people—rarely talked about in the media—that I decided to focus. To show that life\, however strange\, is continuing during this conflict that traumatizes the country.

DESCRIPTION:The fires in La Teste and Landiras made headlines in the summer of 2022. Unprecedented in the Gironde department\, they left a strong impression due to their violence\, size\, and duration.\nAs the cold and rain signal the arrival of winter and the media coverage has shifted to other topics\, the collective Les Associés takes the time to reflect on this episode. \nBy using photography\, as well as video and sound\, Les Associés propose a new documentary project: 600°(*). \nAt the crossroads of economic\, social\, and climatic questions\, the fires in Gironde have raised many inquiries. \nLand use planning\, management of coastal land\, budgetary decisions\, methods of exploitation—several months later\, the list of still relevant questions is long. \nWith 600°\, LesAssociés propose a sensitive and artistic assessment of the events of this summer.

SUMMARY:ARABIAN LOCATIONS\, Gaëtan Soerensen - FR | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Al-Aziziyah\, Saudi Arabia. Close to the Jordanian border\, the valley has been selected as a tourist attraction. Infrastructures are being built in a rush\, and manpower is imported on a massive scale. The Al-Aziziyah district is home to many of these employees\, whose living space is built at the same time as the city itself. Al-Aziziyah didn’t exist a few years ago. This place is a product of the kingdom’s reorganization\, which began around ten years ago. After big cities\, this redevelopment is now extending to the countryside\, which is not prepared for a massive population influx from the capital. \nHere\, it was the absence of any document\, cadastral plan\, or legal evidence that triggered my interest in this medium-sized town\, born of an arbitrary plan in this desert valley—a neighborhood where absolutely no town planning exists. Most of the houses are empty or in a constant state of construction. I try to focus on the question of place and non-place\, to define them through the photographic act. This work seeks to continue a deeper interest in the architecture of Middle Eastern non-places. It’s no longer a question of rendering places as they are. It’s about showing the reality of these places\, even the reality without the idea of a place. To show its factuality. \nGaëtan Soerensen (b. 1993\, France) is a photographer who studied cinema at the University of Strasbourg and photography at the École Supérieure des Arts le Septantecinq (Belgium)\, and who graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d’Arles (France) in 2022. He is currently completing research and creative work on the Palestinian territories (West Bank).

SUMMARY:MOIMOM\, Hugo Weber (FR) | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The relationship between a French teenage single mother and her son has always been peculiar. The mother\, born in Aubervilliers in 1983\, had a complicated life. Abandoned by her mother with her grandfather and siblings as an infant\, she was initially sent to a foster home and later lived with her grandmother until the age of 16\, when her grandmother passed away. She then moved in with her brother. At 18\, she became pregnant by an abusive man from whom she eventually fled\, while working as a photographer in a small studio in Paris. During the son’s childhood\, their relationship was peaceful despite their precarious conditions. However\, things worsened when the mother fell in love with an Italian man\, leading to a move to Milan.\nAdolescence brought further complications due to the son’s rebellious nature and the mother’s severe aggressive drinking problem\, which resulted in years of estrangement after she expelled him from the house at 19. In 2015\, at the age of 42\, the mother suffered a stroke that caused physical and psychological handicaps\, leaving her with lasting memory issues.\nThe most heartbreaking aspect was seeing the illness strip away her free and proud spirit\, revealing a new\, vulnerable side of her. Photography became a therapeutic tool for both\, helping them accept her new condition and reconnect with her past through notes\, diaries\, and old photographs.\nThis therapeutic approach transformed their relationship\, fostering new emotional connections and dialogue through images from her archives and new ones taken during visits. Photography now deeply connects them\, with the mother\, also a photographer\, understanding and respecting the son’s work.\nThe project aims to explore the son’s origins and the complex\, intense relationship with his mother through photography. For the first time\, he sees his mother as a woman and himself as a son\, not just as individuals.

SUMMARY:SHINE ON\, Alex Zoboli (IT) | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, the seismic outcome of the British referendum reverberated across Europe\, igniting a transformative process that would culminate in the country’s departure from the European Community\, finally concluded in February 2020. The ramifications of the referendum extended far beyond mere political implications\, giving rise to a myriad of profound debates encompassing national identity\, economic prospects\, and even the very essence and viability of the European Union itself.\nThe intricate tapestry of Brexit encapsulated a long-standing schism within the establishment\, unveiling the ever deepening crisis of representation within the party system and the erosion of authority experienced by both national and international political elites. It exposed a fundamental breakdown in the national-popular hegemony exerted by the central government over the British people.\nOver the course of the past two decades\, Britain has endeavored to redefine itself as a convergence of historical heritage and a progressive political trajectory. It has sought to reconcile a past deeply rooted in its rich cultural legacy with a future that aspires to forge a democratic\, inclusive\, and forward-thin- king nation capable of confronting the multifaceted challenges posed by the new information age\, the intricate tapestry of ethnic and cultural diversity\, and the diminishing global prominence historically associated with Britain.\n\nEmbarking on my photographic project in 2019 and continuing until the present day\, I ventured across the British Isles\, meticulously examining the ways in which the notion of British national identity has been dynamically molded\, constantly evolving in response to the contemporary global landscape. This profound transformation unfolds through a complex and arduous process\, frequently giving rise to paradoxical and even contradictory effects\, particularly within marginalized sectors of British society and communities.\n\nMy project\, titled “Shine On\,” embraces this foundational premise and strives to unravel the multifaceted and elusive countenance of modern-day Britain. It endeavors to capture the fluid essence of a nation in perpetual flux\, continuously grappling with its own contradictions as it endeavors to carve out a fresh and authentic sense of self in an ever-changing world.\nAs I traversed the familiar landscapes of my childhood\, I found myself documenting a profound moment of societal metamorphosis\, rediscovering places and memories that\, over time\, had been distorted and idealized in my mind. These rediscoveries have accompanied me throughout my journey\, providing a poignant backdrop against which the profound changes gripping our communities can be examined.

SUMMARY:INGREDIENTE PENTRU UN TORT DE MIERE\, CU DRAGOSTE\, Sara Lepore - IT | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Project realized during Futuri Prossimi\, a path promoted by Jest (Turin)\, curated by Francesca Cirilli\, Tommaso Clavarino\, and Tommaso Parrilla.\n“A plastic tablecloth turns into a bizarre path backwards along the artist’s family tree\, with a geographical\, linguistic\, and generational mismatch. The clutter of photographs documents a linguistic misunderstanding: among her mother’s photographic archive\, the artist finds what she imagines—or wishes—to be a youthful love letter to her father. \nWritten in a language that\, though maternal\, was never passed on to her by her mother\, the artist discovers that the love letter is actually a small collection of recipes. The small recipe becomes an opportunity to reunite after years with her aunts in Romania and cook with them\, in a context of total mutual incomprehension\, a cake once again the object of ambiguity. \nOut of haste\, or emotion\, what was supposed to be a honey cake ends up becoming an apple pie. The project thus documents the alienating affection toward a lost family identity\, a misunderstanding that renews identity ties with unexpected affections\, becoming a site for reflection on the importance of language and how it can be a symbol of belonging to a place.” \nMy current project is an interdisciplinary investigation of family identity\, language\, and culture; this project highlights the complexity of family relationships\, the power of language as a vehicle of identity\, and the importance of cross-cultural communication. \nI have indeed been deprived of a part of my culture and a strong part of my roots. Photography is a powerful language\, allowing me to communicate without the use of translations. But languages are important. \nI would like to contribute to the cultural debate through work that can inspire other people to explore their family histories and reflect on the challenges and riches of diversity. \nDuring the exhibition\, I bake and serve the wrong cake so that around the table the dialogue that I have missed for so many years is recreated. The love letter was not a love letter but a recipe; however\, cooking for someone and with someone is in itself an act of love that takes place around a kitchen table.

SUMMARY:Dysnomia\, Alexandre Dupeyron (DE) | Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The title of this series references the Greek deity of chaos. Spanning twelve years of photography\, Alexandre Dupeyron’s project Dysnomia weaves together various stages of his work. Structured as a cycle from matter to matter\, Dysnomia explores the emergence of human consciousness and its descent into the chaos of speed and urban life. The photograph displayed here comes from a specific series within the project\, Runners of the Future. Captured in several megacities\, it reflects the dissolution of the self within the verticality and flow of a generic\, globalized cityscape.\nKnown for his black-and-white work\, Dupeyron used long exposure times to emphasize movement and create a sense of detachment from reality. The use of this space in Bucharest extends the themes and aesthetics of Dysnomia
