Daniel Mîrlea

photographer | Romania

Daniel Mîrlea is a professional nature and wildlife photographer based in Romania. In recent years he has worked with several NGOs on different conservation projects and has partnered with organizations such as WWF Romania, Rewilding Europe and Conservation Carpathia. His most appreciated projects are Vâlcea Naturală, Reintroduction of the Zebra in Armeniș, The Bison Hillock, Southern Carpathians (for Rewilding Europe), and the project The Forest of Immortal Stories (for Conservation Carpathia), where he documented some of the oldest and most spectacular beech trees in Europe.

In addition to his photographic work, Daniel is the vice-president of FORONA (Romanian Nature Photographers Association) and an ambassador for the international movement for responsible nature photography, Nature First Photography. His photographs have been awarded in prestigious nature photography competitions such as the Natural Landscape Photography Awards, Asferico, Memorial Maria Luisa, International Photographer of the Year, BioPhoto Contest and Milvus Photocontest – he is now also a jury member of the Milvus Photocontest.

Daniel believes nature photography is a tool to raise awareness, protect natural places and bring people closer to nature. The role of his photography is not only to show the beauty of nature to the world, but also to highlight sensitive topics on environmental issues and to draw people’s attention to what matters. For him nature photography has become like an extension of what he feels, does and lives and is a healthy lifestyle. Beyond his artistic aspect which is the meaning of his photographic work, Daniel strongly believes that, as a nature photographer, it is his duty to be the voice of the voiceless, to raise awareness of environmental issues and to connect people closer to nature.
