FRAMES FROM PHOTOVACATION
Over the past 30 years, “Photovacation” has established itself as an iconic event in Bulgarian photographic culture. А place where creative freedom meets the waves of the sea, and generations of photographers share inspiration and experiences. This exhibition brings together 30 unique frames, each by a different author, tracing the evolution of photographic pursuits in Bulgaria. These are not just images, they are witnesses to the history of an event that has been a catalyst for the development of a lot of processes in the contemporary Bulgarian photography.
Born from the aspiration for creative freedom in the late 1990s, “Photovacation” began as a forum that gathered hundreds, and in some years thousands, of enthusiasts. The first edition faced challenges, but it soon became the largest photographic gathering in the country, where authors escape everyday life to create among friends and colleagues.
The exhibition highlights the historical and cultural significance of “Photovacation,” showcasing frames that have left a lasting mark not only in the festival’s archives but also in the broader development of Bulgarian photography. These photos reflect changes in styles, techniques, and themes—from classic portraits and landscapes to experimental and conceptual approaches. The event has been a platform for exchanging ideas, where young talents meet established masters, inspiring each other. It has served as a venue for rewarding innovations and has contributed to shaping the photographic community in Bulgaria.
